It sits in old Low Harrogate, close to the Royal Pump Room, Valley Gardens, the Royal Hall and the town’s historic spa heart. This is where Harrogate’s old world of springs, gardens, promenading and taking the waters still feels close.
The pleasure of Montpellier is that it's a place to wander slowly, look into shop windows, turn into small courtyards, notice old buildings and feel the softer side of the town.
Spa Ensemble
Montpellier sits amongst Harrogate’s great spa ensemble, one of the most concentrated collections of spa architecture in England. Within a short walk are the Royal Baths, Royal Hall, Mercer Gallery, Royal Pump Room, Crescent Gardens and Valley Gardens.
When opened, the Royal Baths was one of Europe’s largest hydropathic establishments, offering more than 70 treatments at its peak. The Royal Hall is England’s last surviving Kursaal and is said to contain more gold leaf than the ballroom of Buckingham Palace. Nearby, the Royal Pump Room stands above one of Europe’s strongest sulphur wells, the mineral source that helped Harrogate become known as Britain’s Health Resort.
Sulphur and the Waters
Harrogate’s reputation was built on its remarkable mineral waters, and Montpellier sits beside one of the most important sources in the town. The sulphur wells around the Royal Pump Room were famous for their strength, their distinctive smell, and the ritual of drinking the waters as part of the Harrogate cure.
Visitors came to Harrogate for treatment, but the waters also shaped the whole culture of the town: morning walks, measured glasses, medical advice, social encounters and time spent between gardens, pump rooms and hotels. Around Montpellier, that world still feels close, with the mineral springs sitting beneath the elegance of the spa quarter.
Montpellier Mews
Montpellier Mews is one of the most charming corners of Low Harrogate, a small cobbled shopping nook tucked away from the grander spa buildings around it. With independent shops, intimate frontages and a quieter scale, it offers a different kind of pleasure from the Royal Baths or Royal Hall nearby.
Part of its appeal is the contrast. Within minutes, you can move from the grand architecture of Harrogate’s spa ensemble into this smaller, more enclosed world of courtyards, shopfronts and details. It captures the character of Montpellier beautifully: elegant, independent, historic and made for wandering.
