Origins

In 1571, a traveller knelt at a spring on a Yorkshire heath and tasted something he recognised from the spa towns of Europe. That single discovery turned two quiet hamlets into one of England's most celebrated destinations for healing and gave this place its name, centuries before it became ours.

Discover our Origins

Springs

Chalybeate and sulphur waters surfaced here for as long as records exist, each believed to carry its own particular power to heal.

Nature

Long before anyone bottled or built around it, this landscape was already doing the work — filtering, mineralising, sustaining. The grounds here aren't a backdrop to the cure. They're part of it.

Buildings

Pump rooms, bath houses, assembly halls — every grand building in this story exists because people once travelled long distances for a few weeks of treatment, and needed somewhere remarkable to spend their evenings while they waited for the water to work.

People

From the man who first identified the waters to the patients who travelled across continents to take them, this story has always been carried by people — their hopes, their treatments, their everyday lives lived around a well.
