RIDGEWAY
Harrogate developed as two settlements. High Harrogate and Low Harrogate, shaped by different waters, landscapes and social life. Between them ran a persistent line of movement along higher, drier ground. This route allowed people to move between springs, chapels, inns, and places of gathering.
Over time, this desire line was formalised into paths and streets. It became one of the structuring routes of the spa town. Today, this historic alignment can still be traced through the town centre, with Oxford Street forming its most central and legible surviving section.
This route is known here as the Harrogate Ridgeway.
