Around Harrogate, the therapeutic spa landscape continues through woodland, water, paths, open ground and vistas, forming a living part of the Cure.
Following the River Nidd, Crimple and Oak Beck, it connects the everyday with the wild. A landscape for exploration, recovery and reconnection.

Across three bioregions — Crimple Valley, Oaksdale and Nidd Gorge — Wildbelt seeks to:

Wildbelt is both spatial and cultural. It shapes how Harrogate grows, how it relates to its countryside and how future generations experience the edge of town.

Use the map to explore the wider spa landscape around Harrogate, from the River Nidd and Nidd Gorge to the Crimple Valley and Oakdale.
Each area offers a different way into the landscape, with woodland, water, meadow, paths and vistas to discover.
Crimple Valley forms the great southern arc of the Wildbelt. Designated as a Special Landscape Area, it sweeps around the edge of Harrogate as a defining feature of the town’s approach.
As you arrive from the south, the land opens and falls away, revealing one of the most dramatic gateways into the spa town.
Nidd Gorge woodland clings to a steep-sided valley carved by the River Nidd. Largely cared for by the Woodland Trust, it forms one of the richest and most dramatic landscapes within the Wildbelt.
Ancient broadleaved woodland blankets the slopes, with bluebells carpeting the ground in spring and relics of much earlier history, including Iron Age traces, embedded within its terrain.
Oakdale sweeps across the northern edge of Harrogate as a steep, wooded valley shaped by Oak Beck. Outcrops of millstone grit rise above the slopes, while the beck cuts through the valley floor over rock and stone.
Predominantly deciduous woodland, with a rich understorey of shade-loving plants and bryophytes, gives the landscape a quieter, more intimate character than the open sweep of Crimple.

Connecting land, people and projects
Behind the Wildbelt is a shared effort to connect the landscapes around Harrogate and support the people caring for them.
We are bringing together ecology, stewardship, food, culture and future landscape projects through a framework of shared principles.
Protect and reinforce clear green separation between settlements. Maintain spatial integrity and prevent incremental erosion of landscape form.
Restore ecological function across woodland, meadow and wetland systems. Work with soil and hydrology. Enable regenerative land management and biodiversity recovery.
Create continuous ecological and human connectivity. Establish walking and cycling routes. Reduce fragmentation caused by roads and infrastructure.
Enable shared stewardship and community participation. Foster collective care across different landholdings and partnerships.
Strengthen the relationship between town and landscape. Support education, wellbeing, heritage and spa character as part of everyday experience.
Reintegrate productive landscapes into the urban edge. Support orchards, market gardens, community-supported agriculture and regenerative farming partnerships.

Crimple Commons
Crimple Commons is the emerging landscape framework for the Crimple Valley, the southern arc of the Harrogate Wildbelt.
Developing through walks, conversations, mapping and local engagement, it explores how this important gateway landscape can be cared for as one connected system, bringing together nature recovery, access, active travel, stewardship, local food and the long-term protection of the valley’s open character.
Two early project ideas have begun to take shape through this work: Crimple Common and Crimple Greenway.
