Crimple COMMONS
Growing through walks, mapping, local conversations and partner discussions, it is shaping a shared vision for one of Harrogate’s most important gateway landscapes.
The work explores how the valley can be protected, restored and brought into everyday life as one connected system, linking green separation, nature recovery, active travel, community stewardship, local food, heritage and long-term landscape care.
Two early ambitions are now beginning to take shape: Crimple Common and Crimple Greenway.

Crimple Valley forms one of the defining landscape edges of Harrogate.
Between Harrogate and Pannal, the valley opens into fields, wet ground, woodland edges, long views, walking routes and the line of Crimple Beck. It is a place of daily use, ecological value, local memory and strong community attachment.
Its importance is not only scenic.
The valley helps protect the separation between settlements, supports wildlife movement, holds water, offers access to countryside and shapes the southern arrival into Harrogate.
Crimple Commons begins with this landscape and asks how it can be cared for as a whole.
Crimple Common focuses on land at the heart of the Crimple Valley, where open fields, wet ground, Crimple Beck, woodland edges and long views meet the southern approach into Harrogate.
The proposal explores how this landscape could become a new kind of common: a place for nature recovery, wetland restoration, regenerative land management, community-supported agriculture, walking, learning and long-term stewardship.
Rather than treating this land as a passive edge of town, Crimple Common would give it a clear civic purpose. It could become a living gateway into Harrogate as a spa town shaped by water, landscape, health, food and nature.

JOIN THE CURE

Crimple Greenway is the movement strand of the Crimple Valley Framework.
The project explores how a continuous green route could connect Pannal, the Crimple Valley, the Yorkshire Showground, Fodder, local schools, neighbourhoods and wider routes into Harrogate.
Following the former railway corridor where possible, the Greenway would be more than a path. It would be a landscape corridor, linking everyday movement with habitat restoration, hedgerows, Crimple Beck, meadows and woodland edges.
It could help people move through the valley safely and enjoyably, while making the wider Wildbelt more visible, useful and loved.
